SDBI – European Fashion Award – FASH 2019

SDBI – European Fashion Award – FASH 2019

At the beginning of Berlin Fashion Week, four young talents were honoured with the European Fashion Award FASH 2019 in front of 200 guests in the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin (Museum for Contemporay Art). The award is one of the most important international prizes for fashion students. Together with the Kunstbibliothek of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Art Library of the National Museums in Berlin), a special award for fashion photography was awarded for the first time.
FASH brings talents and experts together at eye level. Being among the finalists already offers numerous advantages. Before the award ceremony, they experienced two days of intensive exchange and networking. The winners

Prizes worth 10.000 Euro
The prize of the European Fashion Award FASH 2019 with a total value of over 10,000 Euros was presented with a cup bowl from Hering Berlin. In addition to the prizes mentioned above, it consists of a presentation in the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin in front of more than 200 specialist visitors. In addition, all prize winners receive individual coaching, are presented on the website FASH.berlin and their portfolios are included in the Kunstbibliothek of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. All three winners of the Fashion Award will also receive prizes from Müller & Sohn for the creation of the pattern.

International Jury
A jury of internationally experienced experts selected the finalists and winners of the European Fashion Award FASH 2019 and the special award for fashion photography on the basis of defined criteria. 131 students from 11 countries with 20 nationalities took part in the competition. The members of the juries:
Dr. Britta Bommert, Head of Sammlung Modebild, Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; Margareta van den Bosch, Creative Adviser H&M; Katherina Deeken, Managing Director Deeken HR; Otto Drögsler, Creative Director Odeeh; Kathrin Hohberg, CEO Photogtapher Agency Kathrin Hohberg; Joel Horwitz, Head of Design, (P&C, Adidas, J. The jury meetings were moderated by of Helge Aszmoneit of the German Design Council.

FASH not only opens a door, but also a gate into the world of work.
The 23 finalists received detailed feedback from 26 experts during the two-day coaching sessions prior to the award ceremony, as well as advice for applications and were able to network personally with potential future employers during the “Professional Preview”.
A workshop on fashion photography in and around the Hamburger Bahnhof and three workshops on “The Art of the Curve – Pattern Design from Draping to Digital” provided technical impetus. “FASH not only opens a door, but a gate for me,” Christian Begaso-Walg describes his motivation to apply for the European Fashion Award FASH 2019. Over 40 talents supported by FASH are already working for internationally renowned companies, some of them in leading positions such as Adidas, Hugo Boss or Dorothee Schumacher, for designers such as Vivienne Westwood or as university lecturers.

FASH @ Fashion Week
The coaching started right after the award ceremony during Berlin Fashion Week. At the invitation of Mercedes-Benz, the prizewinners and finalists will be able to visit shows by such designers as Lou de Betoly, Irene Luft, Maisonnoee, Richert Beil, Sportalm, Rebekka Ruetz and Lena Hoschek. There are also invitations from Hugo Boss, Neonyt, or Panorama for shows, conferences, fairs and parties. The Network invites them to present their work on the roof terrace of Bikini Berlin. The fashion marketing program of the Business School Berlin present collections at a fashion show above the pool of the Haubentaucher on the Berlin RAW site.

Experts are actively involved
In addition to the jury, the following experts were involved during the two coaching days: Tabassom Charaf, stylist (Numéro); Detlev Diehm, Diehm Bespoke; Jacqueline Kellner and Karin Schiller, Lectra; Madeleine Madej, art director and lecturer; Stephan Meyer, style director (AD – Architectural Digest, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ); Eric Maj Potočnik, Visagist; Nicolas Simoneau, Art Director Kaltblut Magazin; Janine Sonnabend and Manuel Hallermeier, CLO Virtual Fashion; Michael Sontag, Fashion Designer; Christian Schwarzenberg, Photographer, CEO Nitty Gritty – Image Editing; and Carl Tillessen, Author and Trend Consultant, Deutsches Mode Institut.

Fashion with magic
Just as a lake becomes overgrown and a new landscape arises, so the finalists want to create a new fashion: ecological, fair and beyond traditional gender images. They want to create fashion that not only follows marketing strategies, but is also an expression of the zeitgeist. Fashion that retains its magic for years. With fashion that is sustainable in a comprehensive sense, they see their chance to survive in a saturated market. “The fashion of the finalists is like a concept car of the automotive industry, a visual research and a foretaste of the future,” says Joachim Schirrmacher, Director of the European Fashion Award FASH.

Breaking through gender roles
The collections of all prize winners dealt intensively with the dynamics of the sexes. What is or should be male and female is increasingly irrelevant. They want to overcome stencils, question and motivate to accept themselves in all their facets. “Wear it if you love it!” That’s how easy it is for the prizewinner Elisa Paulina Herrmann. Katharina Heinze wants to accompany women out of their confines into an open society and Ecehan Altikardes says: “My work should not be a quiet whisper, but a cry against all that is stuck, a cry for individuality, otherness and androgynousness”. Photographer Jakob Tillmann trusts his eye and his already pronounced pictorial language to make the other also stand out: “Natural poses in natural light and therefore a natural mood, or simply the natural and barely made-up model makes fashion accessible to people who are not part of this world.

The European Fashion Award FASH
The European Fashion Award FASH is one of the most important international awards for fashion students. Its aim is to promote young designers by introducing them to the world of business and industry. The European Fashion Award FASH is offered by the non-profit foundation Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie (German Fashion Industry Foundation), SDBI for short. Founded in 1978, the SDBI is the world’s oldest organization for the promotion of fashion students.

Partner – From designers for designers
The European Fashion Award FASH is supported by Messe München, ISPO Munich. Further partners are 25hours Hotels, Carroux Caffee, Deeken HR, Engelbert Strauss, Foodist (snacks), Formes (mannequins), Cornelius Friedemann (carpenter), Hering Berlin (cups), Lectra, Mercedes Benz (shuttle), Müller & Sohn (material prizes), Pieperconcept (hanger), Pixel Grain (prints photos), Pukka (tea), Puma, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (location), Vitra (furniture), Vösslauer (water) and Die Gastfreundin (catering).
But FASH lives above all through private commitment: be it in the jury, the organization or a generous donation. The prize for the young creatives is thus largely supported by experienced creatives.
