The European Fashion Award FASH took place with a new concept this year, as a reaction to the fundamentally changed study regulations, a new generation and the vitalchanges in the fashion industry.

The 20 finalists experienced two days of intensive exchange, networking and mutual learning. The culmination was the award ceremony in three categories in front of 150 guests. For the first time, the finalists also chose an award winner among themselves.

The Award Winners
1st prize students: Annika Klaas, Hochschule Reutlingen (Reutlingen University)
1st prize: Graduates: Maria Presser, AMD – Akademie Mode & Design (Academy Fashion & Design), Berlin
The prizes are each endowed with 2,500 euros and individual coaching.
Finalist’s Award: Carine Kuntz & Alexander Gaertner, Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin (Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin)
The prize is endowed with 500 euros and individual coaching.
All three prize winners will be permanently presented on their own microsites on the FASH.berlin website. All finalists were awarded with a certificate. 104 students from 16 countries took part in the worldwide prize competition.

Internationally experienced jury
A jury of internationally experienced experts has selected the winners of the European Fashion Award FASH 2018 based on defined criteria. In addition, the finalists chose a prize winner from among themselves.
The members of the jury: Katherina Deeken, Managing Director deeken HR, Juergen Gessler, Managing Director Strenesse, Joachim Schirrmacher, Creative Consultant; Adrian Sommerauer, Senior Designer Dorothee Schumacher and Andrea Unterberger, Head of the Design Studio, Akris.

A new generation
The finalists are very critical towards the fashion industry. There are no doubts about the profession itself, but there are deep doubts about the current system of fashion. With initial professional experience at Adidas, Ann Demeulemeester, Dorothee Schumacher, Gerry Weber, Haider Ackermann, Hennes & Mauritz, Hussein Chalayan, Iris van Herpen, Michael Sontag, s.Oliver, Stoll, Vladimir Karaleev or Vetements, this review is anything but naive. But they have the impression that they can do much more than is required of them and want to fight for their ideals of social, sustainable and ethical design or the deconstruction of male stereotypes. Around half of the finalists want to set up their own business. Although they know that small fashion labels hardly have a chance, they don’t want to be intimidated by it.

Exchange and networking
One focus of the two-day workshop was therefore the discussion on the fashion system: What possibilities do designers have to exert influence in a “completely out of joint consumption and value system”? What opportunities do digital technologies offer for design and production? Where and how do words have consequences?
There were reports about starting a career, the creation of a collection at Akris and working in the Puma design team. The close support was supplemented by portfolio consulting and workshops on applicant training, make-up, styling, fashion and streetstyle photography. Individual consultations provided further food for thought for personal development and new motivation.
The experts next to the jury were: Heiko Desens, Creative Director Sport Style, Puma; Gregor Hohenberg, fashion photographer (Achtung, Elle, GQ, Vogue); Joel Horwitz, Senior Designer (Adidas, J. Lindeberg, zLabels); Kristian Sidenius Lenz, Head of HR, Closed; Stephan Meyer, Style Director (AD – Architectural Digest, Harper’s Bazaar, Icon, GQ), Eric Maj Potocnik, make-up artist, Sandra Semburg, Streetstyle photographer (P&C, Veronika Heilbrunner, Vogue Paris, Zara) and Emma Marita Westergaard, Senior Designer (Adidas, Jack & Jones, zLabels).

The European Fashion Award FASH
The European Fashion Award FASH is one of the most important international awards for fashion students. The award winners have excellent career prospects. Today they work for such internationally renowned companies as Adidas, Hugo Boss, Missoni or Schumacher, for designers as Wolfgang Joop and Vivienne Westwood. In addition, they have often received numerous other awards.
The European Fashion Award FASH is presented by the non-profit Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie (German Fashion Industry Foundation), SDBI for short. Founded in 1978, SDBI is the world’s oldest organization for promoting fashion students.

Partners
The European Fashion Award FASH is supported by Messe München, ISPO Munich. Additional partners are BRLO (Craft Beer), Hering Berlin (trophies), pieperconcept (hangers), Pentherformes Group (mannequins), Raw Studios (location), Vitra (furniture) and Die Gasttfreundin (catering).
