European Fashion Award FASH presented at Frankfurt Fashion Week
On the first day of the digital Frankfurt Fashion Week, six young talents were officially awarded the European Fashion Award FASH. The awards for 2020 and 2021 were presented, as the award had to be interrupted last year due to the pandemic. The collections and award winners were presented in a film by Joachim Schirrmacher (creative direction) and Thomas Mocka (camera/editing). In addition, Jakob Tillmann photographed the award-winning works. Tillmann won the special prize for fashion photography in 2019. The fashion show and award ceremony was recorded at Landhausgarten Fränkel in the “Hamptons of Berlin”. The 3.5 hectare park in Kladow is a jewel and offers a magnificent view of the Wannsee as well as Prussia’s Arcadia with the Peacock Island, which is a UNESO World Heritage Site. “We are very happy that after many months of longing it was possible to experience a day full of beauty, fashion and personal exchange in the Landhausgarten,” says FASH Director Joachim Schirrmacher.

The award-winning works
While the industry has ossified, completely new forms of fashion are emerging among the students. Gender roles play just as little a role as a classic dress or jacket. Often the designs go in the direction of garments. Erato Fotopoulos and Lars Witkowski very skilfully combine sportswear with fashionable aspirations in their respective collections. Aylin Tomta has interpreted archetypes and created a completely new and modern male image that is masculine without slipping into mannerism or cross-dressing. Margarita Rozhkova transfers 19th century women’s fashion to men and experiments with the moiré effect. Helena Wieser’s knitwear is truly new. Her collection “Wollust” inspires and makes you want to wear fashion. And Carla Renée Loose, in a clever analysis, questions the glorification of youth as a symbol of success and the future and an ever-increasing alienation from ourselves.
The award is not given to a specific collection, but to the entire portfolio.
“The winners’ work is stunningly good. It is a great pleasure to be able to promote this new generation with FASH”, says couturista Kerstin Strauss, who is a major supporter of the European Fashion Award FASH.
International jury
In order to avoid travelling as much as possible during this period, a jury of internationally experienced experts initially selected 30 finalists on the basis of digital portfolios. With the kind support of the Hotel de Rome in Berlin, the three winners were then selected in their ballroom on the basis of defined criteria.
The difference between the digital portfolios and the sometimes very elaborately produced documentations was striking. Together with the dresses presented by models, the jury was presented with more than a stream of images – the spark of inspiration jumped over and whetted the appetite for fashion. The members of the jury:
Jenny Capitain (Fashion Director Vogue US), Michael Court (Vivienne Westwood), Sebastian Fischenich (Creative Director), Torsten Hochstetter (Creative Director, Puma),
Joel Horwitz (Design Director, Fila Europe), Hella Jongerius (leading designer worldwide), Barbara Markert (fashion journalist, Paris), Joachim Schirrmacher (Creative Consultant, Director FASH), Kristian Schuller (photographer), Kerstin Strauss (Creative Directress, Engelbert Strauss), Franco Tettamanti (photographer), Carl Tillessen (Chief Analyst, German Fashion Institute), Niels Holger Wien (President Intercolor), Niels Holger Wien (President Intercolor). President of Intercolor), Mi-Kyong Yeom (Head of Design, Alpha Tauri).
The European Fashion Award FASH
The European Fashion Award FASH is one of the most important international prizes for fashion students. Its aim is to promote young designers by introducing them to business and industry. The award winners have excellent career prospects. They work for internationally renowned companies such as Adidas, Alpha Tauri, Hugo Boss and for designers such as Dries van Noten or Vivienne Westwood; sometimes as senior designers or heads of design. In addition, they have often received numerous other awards.
The European Fashion Award FASH is organized by the non-profit Foundation of the German Apparel Industry, SDBI for short. Founded in 1978, SDBI is the world’s oldest organization for the promotion of particularly talented fashion students.
