Six young up and coming design students and graduates received the European Fashion Award FASH 2015 during the kick-off for the Berlin Fashion Week. On Monday evening, witnessed by 250 invited guests, the non-profit Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie (German Fashion Industry Foundation), in short SDBI, presented the awards valued at a total of 80,000 Euro at the impressive Neue Museum (New Museum) in Berlin, one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
Heralds of a New Era
The six winning students and graduates used inspirations like archives, dreams or wanderlust to approach the subject of the European Fashion Award FASH 2015, “Freedom”. Their collections move away from the classic, Euro-centric male image, and plumb new depths of fashion. The winning collections trigger impulses for the standardized market, they get to the heart of our desires and are heralds of a new era.
Prizes Totaling 80,000 Euro
The high-level, global competition targets design students from all sectors of design beginning with the fourth semester. A second category was open to graduate projects completed in 2014. The overall value of all prizes is 80,000 Euro. In addition to cash prizes of 10,000 Euro the students receive support for their activities and future careers.
A high-caliber jury selected the winners according to predetermined criteria from the projects submitted by 141 participants from 27 countries. The evaluation was performed anonymously. In addition to the final product the evaluation also focused on the research, concept, design process, finish and tailoring, as well as presentation. The award-winning projects consist of concepts exploring the potentials of fashion. They are comparable to concept cars, not everyday apparel.
Focus On the Students
The European Fashion Award FASH does not consider itself a marketing tool. The focus is on endorsement of the students and presentation of their work. The award is characterized by its fairness, a strictly professional direction, as well as an international jury. Due to its elaborate selection process and last, but not least, the careers of its award winners to date the European Fashion Award FASH has established itself as one of the most important international endorsement awards for fashion students.
Demand For Sustainable Support
This is the 10th time the European Fashion Award FASH has been presented. In his speech, Tobias Gröber, Chairman of SDBI, emphasized that contrary to other industries the fashion industry does not treat its new generation very gently, and reminded us that there is no governmental endorsement available. Gröber appealed to the relevant political institutions to launch a sustainable support program, citing countries like Italy, France, England, Turkey or the United States as role models, all nations investing millions in the fashion industry. The industry invited Gröber to attend the first talent exchange to be held in Munich in October, where close to 150 submitted projects will be available for review.
Guests celebrated in the Griechischer Hof (Greek Courtyard) at the Neue Museum, which was impressively restored by architect David Chipperfield. The winning collections were presented with the help of mannequins provided by the Formes. The nearby vestibule hosted an offering of fine wines, served with crostini, fruitcake with Camembert and celery crudités with Roquefort cream.
In addition to hosting family and friends the audience included opinion leaders and experts from the retail, higher education and government sectors, as well as executives and designers from leading companies, such as Closed, Comma, Freitag, G-Star, Liebeskind, Not Just A Label, Peek & Cloppenburg, Vitra or Wunderkind. Among the guests: Torsten Hochstetter (Global Creative Director Puma), Benjamin Höhner (Head of Menswear Zalando/zLabels), Designer Tim Labenda (FASH 2013), Frank Leder and Michael Sontag. This allowed the winners to gain their first contacts to lead their way into the world of fashion.

Margareta van den Bosch is Creative Advisor at H&M and responsible for guest cooperations with designers from Karl Lagerfeld, Madonna to Versace. Working as Chief Designer from 1987 to 2008 she was very much responsible for the rising success of the fashion syndicate.
Torsten Hochstetter has been Global Creative Designer for Puma since 2013 after holding positions at S.Oliver, Adidas and O’Neill.
Dr. Adelheid Rasche, Art and Fashion Historian, has been the head of the Sammlung Modebild, at the National Museums in Berlin, since 1990. It is the world’s largest special library and graphic collection on the cultural history of fashion and apparel. She has curated many exhibitions, and has published widely.
Joachim Schirrmacher works as a Creative Consultant in Berlin. He combines commerce and design, research and praxis, the visual and verbal in his activities. He has volunteered as the director of the SDBI’s European Fashion Award FASH since 2004.
Michael Sontag The master scholar is considered one of Germany’s most renowned fashion designers. He has been presenting his collections at the Berlin Fashion Week since 2009.
Franco P. Tettamanti is an established haute couture photographer living in Paris. He is well known for his work for customers like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Akris, Vivienne Westwood, Universal Music or Madame Figaro as well as his insights behind the scenes of the industry.
European Fashion Award FASH 2016
Featuring the theme “Change”, the European Fashion Award FASH 2016 searches for visions for a new era. Wars, conflicts and catastrophes change the world, yet globalization and digitalization also have a fundamental impact on the world, resulting in completely new economic models. How can fashion react to this change? What are the visions? Who will ride the wave of change and claim the future?
Registration deadline is August 31st, 2015; submission deadline is September 25th, 2015.
Platform for Young Designers
The European Fashion Award FASH is considered one of the most important international endorsement awards for fashion students, and has been active as a platform for the new generation of designers since 2005. It is an annual competition by the not-for-profit Stiftung der Deutschen Bekleidungsindustrie (German Fashion Industry Foundation), in short SDBI.
Thanks to the European Fashion Award FASH, its communication, publications and extensive industry network SDBI plays a groundbreaking role for students, design and industry. Klaus Steilmann, at the time Europe’s largest manufacturer of women’s fashion, founded SDBI in 1978.
