The Korean Mi-kyong Yeom has taken a trip through music. She concentrated on the essence of travelling in this, namely to achieve a new feeling and consequently to get the strength to become alive and lively again. The starting point of the womenswear collection is the dramatic music of Schubert’s “Winterreise”. Other sources of inspiration are taken from three Expressionists: the composer Hans Zender, the sculptor Ernst Barlach (Silhouettes) and the action-painter Jackson Pollock (emotional effect). The color concept is based on a winter journey through the forests of Germany.
Jury Reasons
Mi-kyong Yeom has interpreted travelling and associated experiences of joy and pain, fun and difficulties, in an amazingly graceful and very independent way. Her work shows a perfect design approach. Clothing of great poetry, identity and natural modernity. They arouse great longing in the person looking at them. She already chose her inspiration sources so cleverly and illustrated them so
well that an individual language becomes visible. This professionalism is carried on through to the
realization with its masterful drapery, beautiful prints and subtle color concept.

“Drawellink Places” is an interdisciplinary project between fashion and painting, Berlin and Barcelona, two- and three-dimensional representation.
A very varied and flexible look of a brand has been created using the media of clothing, bags and accessories with potential for additional products and experiences. The concept has its roots in street art and couture. It has been implemented using appropriate techniques. The user is invited to play and personalize with a high degree of poetic force. The bags and the clothing should become part of the wearer and his/her history.
All products can be used in many ways. The all-rounder bag can be large or small, for example. It can be carried on your back, over your shoulder or on the hips. The Office-Picnic-Land bag becomes a mobile workstation in a park. And the Travelart Bag interprets “The fine art of travelling” as a journey through art and provides room for bulky work materials according to the motto of Oskar Schlemmer’s “KiK – Kunst im Koffer” (trans: “Art in a Suitcase”).
“Drawellink Places” is also a plea for discovering, exploring and becoming conscious, in other words, relearning how to see far from standardized pictures and uniform expectations. For Karen Scholz and Joan Tarragó Pampalona, drawing is an answer to the inflation of digital picture worlds. Consequently, the monsters drawn are the focus and center of the project. They are a lot more than decoration; in fact they are animation and become pieces of clothing themselves. The clothes and bags protect and adorn, convey an image and represent a concept of life. Despite all the innovation, they are also suitable for everyday use.
Jury Reasons
The inspiring work “Drawellink Places” convinces with a comprehensive presentation. The strong idea to transfer the graffiti culture from building walls to clothing and luggage has been implemented consistently with appropriate means. Regardless of whether clothes, bags or accessories, “Drawellink Places” is outstanding in all areas. For example, there is a balance between “loud” clothes, which are very ornamental and graphic (rather for a house party or an art exhibition) and “soft” ones, which only show stylistic references (such as a coat for an elegant dinner). This demonstrates a good example of the variety and flexibility, which is important for a fashion brand. Contrary to other submissions for the special prize of Fashion + Brand (which did not have sufficient substance for an award), this succeeded because the brand idea and not a logo is the focal point. In short words: if you know who you are, you also know you look like.
Additionally, not only the fact that the culture of street art has not only been transferred professionally is outstanding, but also the fact that the cheerful and poetic spirit has been maintained. The clothes invite the user to play and interact, to communicate and personalize. The longer you deal with the products, the more you discover and enter into another world.
Karen Scholz and Joan Tarragó Pampalona are two very skilled designers, who would be perfect to work together with Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton for a season.

“4 Kilos – 4 Seasons”, the name says it all. This minimalist and elegant collection for women and men provides light clothing, which only needs little space when packed, for a mobile work life. This is achieved thanks to a skilled selection of materials and colors (the cashmere only has one-tenth the weight of sheep’s wool) as well as simplified, innovative cuts. For example, the coat becomes a cape and then a blanket, pants become a jacket or a jacket becomes a bag. As a result, the wearer is optimally prepared for changes of site and weather as well as for various events. This is a work of substantial originality and quality.
Jury Reasons
The work “4 Kilos – 4 Seasons” fulfills the briefing perfectly. It is independent, practical and stylish. The clothes can be combined in many ways and are easy to care for. Batmunkh Bataa is a talented designer with a high degree of sensitivity for materials and colors.

The men’s collection “Grand Tour” emphasizes subjective moments by focusing on the experience of travelling. It is a critical examination of the relations between opposites: I and he, interior and exterior, the foreign or strange and your own. Arnold Gevers also took a Grand Tour to Paris and St. Petersburg based on the model of aristocratic sons of the 18th century who matured from country squires into men of the world during the trip. The idea was to create a structure from experiences of the foreign to provide wearers with a strong emotional identity. The colors range from indescribable white to subdued colors and extreme color combinations all the way to a black outfit, which stands for the sum total of all experiences.
Jury Reasons
“Grand Tour 2006” starts from the subjective viewpoint of the designer and consequently results in a unique design, which fits the pulse of the next season. The menswear outfits are quite brilliant. The beautifully worked collection is in terms of fashion trend the most futuristic ones of the contest. Arnold Gevers is really in middle of the time spirit, he feels what’s going on. Materials such as reflective foil and oxidized denim will be seen all around the next season. Denim stands for oxidized bronze statues in Paris here. Arnold Gevers also demonstrates an outstanding feeling for the spirit of the times in his design style.

The collection “360° Variety” provides functional and elegant travel clothing for women at the same time, who take trips with a backpack to visit cities, experience culture or visit places far away. Thanks to multi-functionalism – almost every piece of clothing can be used in two or more ways by turning it inside out, folding, shortening or lengthening – a light wardrobe has been created. It is not only functional, but also stylish. There are also clothes for special occasions. For example, a skirt becomes a top for nightlife, an elegant coat becomes a sleeping bag, the skirt a pad and the raincoat a shelter and the (emergency) accommodation outside is ready
Jury Reasons
The collection “360° Variety” does credit to its name. It provides young women on backpacking trips not only with clothing that is practical, but also which is fashionable. This is a market niche, which has barely been cultivated till now.

“Zeitgeist 21-06” is a functional women’s and men’s collection. It was designed for a global person, who lives from a suitcase and wants to adapt fast and easily to many situations, regardless of whether for a meeting or for walking. The collection lines London, New York and Beijing were allocated the colors red, grey and yellow following research for pictures in the Internet. The cuts were derived from the routes of the streets and subway maps. The atmosphere of the cities is conveyed by silkscreen prints. The clothes can be turned inside out. A new image is also created by the combination of the collection lines.
The work was created during studies at colleges in Schneeberg (Thuringia) and Hämeenlinaa (Finland).
Jury Reasons
The collection “Zeitgeist 21-06” is with its architectural lines and spacy materials a very strong actual fashion statement. The experiment of combining leather and functional fabrics (such as Dryskin or Nanosphere from Schoeller) to create a material also demonstrates the talented sense of fashion of Katrin Sergejew.

English businessmen and women spend cumulative years travelling. They do this mostly in uniform suits, which although considered standard worldwide hardly correspond to the needs of travellers. “Suitable” provides a solution: a combination of coat and suitcase for unconventional women and men. Three pockets with a volume of 20 liters are tailored strategically into the coat. As a result, the owner is able to pack all belongings required for a three-day business trip. The coat will remain comfortable at the same time, and allow the free use of both hands. The unique cut and the high quality of details also make it possible to fold “Suitable” simply into a compact suitcase. It can also be worn as a traditional coat. Judicious selection of materials (waxed cotton, polypropylene and neoprene) and fine workmanship means Suitable is simultaneously both weatherproof and breathable.
Jury Reasons
“Suitable” – a combination of coat and suitcase – can be compared to a concept car. It remains wearable despite all innovations. Regardless whether worn as coat, a coat with filled baggage pockets or carried as a suitcase, all versions function without interfering with the other ones. An integrated frame simplifies folding. The precise observation of those on business trips, professional research, fantastic sensitivity for material and colors, balanced proportions, precise working out of the very complicated cut and the high degree of craftsmanship of the prototype make the work the most brilliant and innovative one submitted for the special luggage award. Lisa Stroux has hit a nerve with her blend of fashion and product design. The very graphic draft of high architectural quality is trendsetting. Despite all technical virtuosity, “Suitable” is so chic that you would like to see the clothing collection that goes with it. In addition, Lisa Stroux is not only creative, but she is also able to think and work in an interdisciplinary manner.

Travelling means a journey and a stay. “Transit” provides an adequate solution for both. The light Textiles dresser (2.7 kilos/80 liters volume or 1.7 kilos/40 liters) has been developed for “modern nomads”, who want to feel at home on the road. After all, personal possessions create a feeling of familiarity. “Transit” is set up similar to a tent to create a dresser. It provides seven compartments to store your baggage in a clearly arranged way. Anything that should be kept out of the sight of others can be put in the bag. High-tech materials and workmanship make it waterproof and provide a look of top quality. The conventional wardrobe trunk has been realized in a modern way.
Jury Reasons
An ingenious idea – a dresser in a suitcase. Oliver Reinecke fulfills the needs of many consumers, specially “modern nomads”, who are looking for ultralight luggage and comfort, with an excellent ratio of volume to weight. A perfect solution for a trip to friends or long-term stays abroad, where no dresser is available, or as a clean space to keep things in third-rate hotels.
The reinvention of a wardrobe trunk using high-tech materials is completely new, clear and to the point. The concept with self-explanatory functions is clear to the point and provides potential for a baggage series. Not only the outstanding quality of the prototype and the painstakingly worked-out details are convincing. The brochure is also professional and considers the fundamentals of brand design.

Anna Steinmann
“Yoga”
7th Semester
Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee/School of Art and Design Berlin-Weißensee
Prize: 750 euros
annasteinmann@gmx.de
www.kh-berlin.de
Travelling is a very individual matter. But it does not make sense to design a piece of luggage for a very specific target group. After all, a businessman also takes adventureous vacations sometime, and a visitor to the love parade might go to a meeting in Milan on another day.
The modular luggage series “Yoga” provides different volumes, depending on whether intended for three days or three weeks. The concept is based on the principle of a bamboo mat. This mat (50 x 160 cm) made of two layers of textiles is attached fixed by a sewn-in plastic rod in one direction, and it is flexible in the other direction. The mat is connected by a zipper with side parts of various sizes with stable shapes. As a result, the bag becomes a suitcase and then a replacement for a dresser at your destination. Smaller bags can be attached to the mat and consequently simplify organization of the luggage. The mat can even be used to lie on. A base with wheels can be attached with hooks. Other options are shoulder and backpack straps and individual selection of colors and materials.
Jury Reasons
Anna Steinmann analyzed the requirements for luggage very carefully. The modularly constructed luggage series is not a different design, but instead a new conceptual approach that represents a qualitative leap. The plain but well thought-out completed work using a material sample (as required) instead of a fully developed prototype communicates the concept convincingly.

www.designacademy.nl
“Velina Volante” is a backpack for women, who also value fashion and glamour during adventure vacations. The 2.7 kilo backpack is designed for the physiognomy of women. In addition, pressure on the breast is reduced thanks to novel shoulder straps, which are formed like a bra. Folded pleats on the sides make it possible to expand the volume from 50 to 75 liters. At the same time, they are the essential element of the novel feminine look. This is supported by the selection of materials (Schoeller and Kvadrat) as well as the colors bronze and anthracite. The lid compartment can be removed and used as a handbag. There is also a powder compact, a seat cushion and room to pack clothes with care for special occasions.
Jury Reasons
The idea of a backpack for women is not completely new. But the realization of such using glamorous materials, colors and practical accessories, e.g., an attached pocket for a powder compact, is new. Many details of the prototype such as zippers, pockets, locks or belts were taken from fashion, which do not always fulfill the functional criteria. But there is potential for this novel backpack on the market.
